Worship With Me Sunday: Who Am I

March 1, 2009

Numbers 15:37-41 God spoke to Moses: "Speak to the People of Israel. Tell them that from now on they are to make tassels on the corners of their garments and to mark each corner tassel with a blue thread. When you look at these tassels you'll remember and keep all the commandments of God, and not get distracted by everything you feel or see that seduces you into infidelities. The tassels will signal remembrance and observance of all my commandments, to live a holy life to God. I am your God who rescued you from the land of Egypt to be your personal God. Yes, I am God, your God."

What great wisdom there is in these passages!!! Is there something that takes your heart or your attention from God? What could you make to remind you to serve God and not your flesh? Right after I finished nursing my first son, I slipped into the habit of smoking.(Hey, I had been a Marine for four years, picked up a few bad habit and was still rough around the edges!) But I would only do it in the back yard where "no one could see me". As I was reading a daily devotion I read this scripture: Genesis 4:7 "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” I wrote this down on a index card and taped it, at eye level, on the back door. So every time I thought about going outside to smoke a cigarette I read this verse. It reminded me that God is always watching and through the power of God I was able to not smoke again. Notice I didn't say quite smoking. Why? Cause it is so easy to quite, the hardest part is not starting again. So on this day of worship, I ask you to pause and reflect: What infidelities against God do you have and how can you over come those infidelities? Make up your mind to go forth this day to do something to change your heart's desire about this one thing, and set God before that desire. I love the Contemporary English Version of Matthew 19:26 "Jesus looked straight at them and said, "There are some things that people cannot do, but God can do anything." You alone will not be able to defeat this temptation, but with God's help you can. Are you ready not only to accept his help but also obey that which he commands you to do?

Father, let us always remember that we are yours!!!! Help us to focus on You today and set aside all distractions and desires so that we can place you in your rightful place within our hearts and lives. You are Holy, and You are Worthy. Show us how we can live out these truths in our lives and honor you with each breath we take today. In Jesus Glorious Name we pray, Amen
