Sorry for being absent this week. I have been soaking in some amazing posts (1 & 2 specifically) from over at A Holy Experience!! As I read over and and over the words she has poured out to bless us I think: "How can a woman I have never met reach so deep within me and cause such turmoil?" I know the answer, it is nothing short of God's amazing power to minister to his children in their times of need!!! And his timing is perfect, as always. Here is the memory verse I am working on this month:

Ezekiel 36:25-27

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;
I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

I have stumbled at the last part, meaning I can recite the verse up till this point and my brain just goes blank. It will not stick and instead of forcing the issue and making the method of memorization my motivation, I'm pausing and waiting for God to reveal what it is within the 1st three "points" that is not being written on my heart. Being defined by your past is such a hard habit to break. And as I have struggled with this for over most of my adult hood I am coming to an understand, a place of rest you might say.

Maybe, just maybe it isn't for me break rather a tool for God to use to minister to me.

Maybe, just maybe there is so much still to be revealed not forgotten that will draw me ever closer in His presence.

Maybe, just maybe there is more glory for Him to come from my sorrow.

Maybe, just maybe then will He be able to put His Spirit within me that I may follow His decrees and delight in His laws.

As sisters in Christ we can find encouragement in each other as we share our heartbreaks, break throughs and moments spent with the Savior. $O Budget Project

Okay, so I have blown the $0 budget theme big time, but not before I made a really cool calendar center!!!!

This week's for Social Saturday was inspired by Full of Great Ideas $0 Budget Month.

Last year I had a 12 month tear away calendar. Well after December I was stuck with the back of it and a need for a new calendar for 2012. My first step was to pick out a calendar template I like. Thankfully I came across ANYTHINGBUTPERFECT.COM!! She has printables galore and they are F-R-E-E, yeah!!!! Then I rounded up some clothes pins and away I went!!!

Out with the old!! I cleared away all the pieces that didn't tear off.

Next I found some fabric that was cute and would last me a couple of months. As much as I would love to change this out every month, it just ain't happening. I made sure there was about an inch extra all the way round.

Next I used my glue gun and went to town. To make it a little neater, I used my "sewing" skills and folded in the sides. I know there is a name for this but I have no idea. See mad sewing skills!!!!!

Then I used this handy dandy tool, not sure what it is called either, but it punches a hole into the fabric with a really loud sound effect!!! But hey it works.

Then finished off the backboard with these circle things. Some left-over stuff from when I made cards.

Here are my cloths pins spray painted and glued into place.

Nice ribbon and rick rack for special effect, looking good!!!

Monthly calendar, which quickly filled up!

Two more cloths pins with ribbon glued on. I use these to show at a quick glance what we will be doing for the week and my to do list for the day.

And this is my monthly cleaning list. As I complete a task I just mark it off. This helps me stay on task and remain flexible to go with my never the same daily routine!!!

Staying Organized after Christmas

Okay so there are just too many link parties for me to keep up with!!! But hey, I'm a party girl and want to participate, when I can. So I decide that I would pick on link party each week and blog about it on Social Saturday. Sounds fun and doable, what do you think?

This week isn't really a link up but I was inspired by Happy in her Organized in 365 Series and thought I would play along.

The last two weeks of 2011 I went through each room, one by one and purged them. Papers, items not used, items that belonged in another room, clothes that didn't fit, clothes we don't wear; it all went out the house!!!!!

And yet this is what my stairs looked like after the New Year!

But not any longer. I've got a plan and here are the rules. Items left out on the floor are put in the green basket. The kids can pick the items out and put them back where they belong OR if any item is left in the green basket on Friday morning, it is mine to do with as I please!!!! And here is my plan of action. If it is a first time offense, it gets put in the Put Away basket:

If it is an item that we have not designated a space for, it gets put in the Find A Home basket. (This allows a grace period after Christmas and birthdays.)

If the item is just not being put up I get to put it in the Give Away bag or the Donate bag. I usually have an idea of who I want to give an item to so the Give Away bag is given away weekly. The Donate is put in our garage and awaits our twice a year donation trips. This give them a chance to miss the item and earn it back or an out of sight out of mind storage solution!

Here is my method in progress.

The last choice, I reserve, is to throw the item away. This week, there were only 3 things that were thrown away, so all my de-cluttering did do some good!!!

And the final result is a safe and neat looking stairway!!!!

Sew Much To Do: Week 16 Composition Cover

It has been so long since I blogged about my sewing that I forgot about Sew Much To Do. Not only was this week's project a Christmas gift but it was also one of my I want to do that projects!!!! And let me tell you, CJ is enjoying it greatly!!!!

You can get directions to this over at Moda Bake Shop. I didn't do mine just like the tutorial as I didn't have time to do mine front cover all fancy like hers', so I just cut two 11 x 7.5 (which was the original measurement for the back.) Next time I make the crayon holder I will make it a bit taller and when I make one of these for JJ I will cut out two 11 x 25, one for the entire front and one for the lining. I also plan on making the pockets longer for color pencils and putting them on the inside flaps instead of the front. As you can tell in the first picture, CJs crayons are breaking but thankfully that has not stopped her creativity!!!!

On New Year's Day

I would like to encourage anyone who has not read the bible in it's entirety to make that a priority in 2012. Whether you are a believer or wondering what to believe just reading the bible is so life impacting because the truth is, you have to make a decision. Are you going to believe this is the Living Word of God or not. But I would like to challenge you NOT to make that decision until you have read every single word written. I believe and know to be true that God's Word is Living because it changes your heart and renews your mind and will transform your life, if you let it. I think many people never experience this because they are not willing to yield their own personal thoughts and actions to God. And although this is a life time decision, you have to decide every day of your life to yield to God, you have to have a starting point. When will you decide and what will it take in your life for God to get your attention?

In my life God used the painful loss of our unborn baby. But how about you. Is God trying to get your attention. If so are you ready to be still and listen? And may I be so bold as to say if He is not trying to get your attention will you ask yourself if you have turned a cold shoulder to Him, ignoring Him so long that He isn't even talking to you!?!

I know this isn't your typical Happy New Year greeting but this isn't going to be a typical year for us!! Lets determine to take each day to come to know Christ in a more meaningful and purposeful way. For each individual that is as different as we are so you decide how you are going to purpose each day. As the year draws to a close we have much to be thankful for! It has been such an adventure settling into our very own home in NC. Big Daddy received word in November that he has been selected for promotion and we are so proud of him. He is also serving as our church’s AWANA TNT Director and Young Adults Sunday School teacher. This year involved several surgeries for him and he no longer needs glasses!!! L2L is very busy keeping up with lesson plans for 3 children, teaching at our local homeschool group, serving as our church’s AWANA Commander and will begin teaching the 1st-3rd grade Sunday School in the new year. LJ has become quite the skateboarder. He is doing well with his lessons and continues to excel in his TNT handbook. He completed his first year of Coach pitch baseball and began jazz lessons in September. JJ is enjoying his final year in Sparks and working hard so he can go to Camp-A-Rama. He is trying his hand at skateboarding and rollerblading but enjoys his Wii and DS the most. He is doing great with his lessons, “played” his first and only year of T-ball and participated on his first bowling league. CJ is growing up too fast!! She participated in her first dance recital in May and beauty pageant in June taking home most photogenic and 1st runner up. School is fun for her right now as she is learning so much side by side with the boys in History and Science. We are very thankful to call ourselves homeschoolers for yet another year. Our family wishes you a blessed New Year and Christ-centered Christmas!!!

The Path to knowledge

And I did, I surrendered it all to Him that day. And even though I was going home heartbroken, empty handed and completely broken, there was a calm within my heart that I never knew. Some might say it was the calm before the storm but knowing what I know now, it was Christ taking ownership of my life and settling everything down. See as a young child, I had heard Christ calling my name and answered His call. Unfortunately I was never given the chance to know Him through God's Word or have an intimate growing relationship.

There are several ways you can look at growing up in the church: a blessing or a stumbling block. I have seen very strong children emerge from Christian families. More often than not, however I have seen resentful, disconnected children who know how to do the Sunday routine but have no relationship with Christ. And I knew and know, that isn't what I wanted for my family. Truth be told, though, I had no idea how to raise a Christian child. I knew very little about the bible and even less on how to raise a child who would love Christ and accept His precious gift of Salvation. I did know, however, that the Bible contained all the answers I was seeking. So that was my first step, reading through the entire bible.

Coloring gift tags for The Legend of the Candy Cane

Even as I write this it just doesn't seem like we only have 10 days till Christmas. But it is true. As you can tell, on the right, I haven't gotten everything done yet. Christmas Cards still need to be addressed, handmade gifts aren't sewn for my kids yet but I do have all my ingredients for Christmas dinner bought and with a bit of an adjustment my make and takes are almost done.I am almost set to finish up this year by relaxing a bit and penning some goals I have for next year such as:

365 Less Things
A Lifestyle of Thanksgiving
Becoming Radical

After all this blog really is about my path to sanctification and I must confess I have gotten distracted by the to do list. I look forward to slowing down and just being instead of doing. You can't experience God in the future and the past is over but in this very moment, right here and now is where we experience God. I have no idea how that is going to look but I would love your encouragement and company as I walk this path in the New Year!!!!

And so it is with great anticipation of what God is going to reveal as I just rest in His presence. Giving up on trying to fix myself and letting Him work out His transformation in me that I finish up this 12 weeks till Christmas journey. As you finish up this last week, think about ways you can turn your focus away from earthly treasures and more to heavenly treasures. Taking the Less is More approach and being present in the right here and right now!!!! Which is actually one of the items on our to do list this final week:

2 Weeks till Christmas

Can you believe we are really so close to Christmas as well as the end of the year? Yikes we are!! So if you are like me the craziness has already begun and you are not going to want any extra surprises, so I'm going to go ahead and give you the game plan that will complete our 12 Weeks till Christmas!

I am all about beating the lines so we are going to do most of our shopping for our Christmas Meal and mailing off Christmas cards this week and begin or finish up Christmas gifts. I'm going to be working on a couple of cool gifts for LJ and JJ and CJ. And I think I am going to stay simple with make and takes this year and do some chocolate dipped spoons!!!!

At our one week mark before Christmas we will have our bake day, prepare our final freezer meal and plan to deliver gifts and baked goods.

And finally, here are a couple of pictures I managed to get this week. It was one of those crazy weeks and it is going to flow right into the weekend. Fun, huh!!!!

3 Weeks till Christmas ?!?!

Seriously?! Is it really that close. Yes my friends it is. I did not make my deadline for Christmas cards but thankfully I still have plenty of time!!!!! When I was pulling out Christmas decorations I realized I bought Christmas cards on sale, last year, for 25 cents a box!!! So I splurged and bought some glitter pens and am sprucing up the cards just a bit.

I only have 5 more boxes to go!!!!

The kids and I worked on what was suppose to be our Advent Christmas Tree but I just didn't have enough time or resources to finish it, so it will have to wait till next year. We did have fun putting it together though!!

Sew Much To Do: Week 15 A Lampshade

This was a lot of fun. I wasn't able to make what I had originally planned because my fabric wasn't wide enough. After sitting in my thinking chair, this is what I came up with:

The final touch to CJ's room, well at least for now!

The fabric and ribbon I'm trying to decide what to do with.

I cut the ribbon the length of the lampshade and only used one piece of the fabric for the next part.

I cut 9 pieces but only ended up using 6.

With my pinking shears, I cut out my strips.

Next I ran a gathering stitch down the center of each strip.

Next, I gathered the strip just a little shorter than the ribbon so I could fold the ribbon over for a neater appearance.

Checking my work. I left extra fabric on each end so that I could fold it under.

Using a zig zag stitch, I attached the ribbon to the middle of the strips. Very cute huh!

Next you just glue the strips onto the lampshade. I started with 3 strips and spaced them out and let the glue dry.

The next morning I filled in the gaps with 3 more strips.

I just used some Aleene's Ok to Wash fabric glue because it is what I had on hand.

And ta da, there it is. The wind blew right as I was taking this picture.

I told my husband I think it is missing something but will just wait a bit till I put my finger on it exactly. So there you have it, the last addition (for the moment) to CJs very pink room. And with that I think Sew Much To Do is going to take a break. I have lots of Advent crafts to do with the kids and as most of you know December gets kinda crazy so I'm going to let the sewing machine chill out for a bit and enjoy some memory making moments with the kids. Our big turkey day is here!!! Hopefully you all have your aprons on and are ready to cook and welcome family and friends to your dinner table and give thanks for all the wonderful and even not so wonderful things that have happened this year. Hopefully this weekend will find you with some time on your hands to enjoy family, catch up on any preperation you haven't gotten to yet or allow you some time to start working on your advent devotions. Sew Much To Do: Week 14 Invisible zipper

Sew Much To Do is all about me inching closer to my dream of sewing professionally. Which often means doing things I've never done and seeing if I can make it work. And that is what happened this week as I learned there is a big difference between a regular zipper (that I did not pick up) and an invisible zipper ( that I did pick up) for CJ's mini pillow out of a pillow case. So here is how it all went down:

1. I took my hot pink pillow case with right side out and pulled the inner seam up to the opening and sandwiched it between the top and bottom of the opening.

Seam from inside, which is the opposite side of the pillow case.

2. I secured the opening and seam together and straight stitch through all 3 layers.

Pillow case pinned and is now half of its original length.

3. My simple straight stitch makes a new seam at what will be the top of the pillow case.

4. Here is where my lack of knowledge almost proved destructive!!! What I did was cut about a half inch slit on both sides of the pillow case opening to open up the fabric so I could "just" sew in the zipper. What I should have done was only cut a slit in the side were the zipper would start but not the end side. (You will see why in a minute.)

5. Oh wait lets stop so I can show you mistake number two of my learn as you go method. On the back of the zipper it said to iron out the zipper so that you could see the two seams. Well I couldn't find those at first and just ironed it out like it is on the right side. It wasn't until I was trying to feed the zipper into my invisible zipper foot, that I saw the two seams and had to unpin the zipper and iron it out again.

Can you see how the left side of the zipper lays flat but the right side is raised up?
It needs to be flat like the left side.

6. Now you can attach the invisible zipper to your pillow case. What you are looking at right now is the pillow case wrong sides out BUT the right side of the seam turned up so you can attach the right side of the zipper to the right side of the fabric.

7. If your zipper is too long, just pull it up and align it with where you want it to stop.

8. I thought this was going to be the hardest part and it was really simple. I just fed the zipper into my foot and away I went.

9. Right before you foot touches the zipper you back-stitch and you are almost done with side one.

10. Now you are going to pull the two tails of thread over to the wrong side of the fabric and tie them off.

11. Sew the second side on just like you did the first side.

12. Mistake three of my learn as you go method: leave a bit more of a tail on the end of the zipper.

13. The start side of my zipper ended up just like I envisioned and came together perfectly.

14. It was the stop side that was a nightmare!!! I was sewing and re-sewing and flipping to sew it from a different angle to get that side to finally close up.

15. Ladies and Gentlemen: my first ever invisible zipper!!!

16. I used sew-able heat and bond on coordinating fabric, cut out a "C" and ironed it onto the pillow. I outlined the C with hot pink thread but you can't tell in this picture.

I know that I told you last week that this was the last little thing I was going to do for her room BUT there is one more Monday in November and I still have alot of that coordinating fabric left since the "C" didm't use up much of the 1/4 yard I bought. Hopefully you will stop on by next week and see how it all comes together!!!

"What, are you serious. After all He has put you through and you fall for the I am with you line. Don't do it!"

"Oh God, I want to believe him! I am confused and scared and hurt. I don't understand anything anymore."

"Come home!"

And with those two words, the battle was over and the devil was furious. Bringing up the past and making accusations against God. But I had hear my God's voice and knew clearly now who Satan was. And boldly declared to him: "Get out of my thoughts and you have no room in my life anymore!!!!"

And there was silence. I heard nothing and got really scared. And the only thing I could whisper was a line that came flashing back from a Judy Blume book:

"Are you there God?"

"I ALWAYS have been."

"This is too much, I can't do this I can't face another day with this heartache. It hurts so bad Father, it hurts so bad." I remember saying that over and over and over: "It hurts so bad."

"My daughter, it wont be easy but I am with you. Do you believe that? Do you trust in that?"

"God, you have to get me through this. I can't do this on my own. I am not strong enough."

"Then fall into my arms, my precious child."

And 12 Weeks till Christmas keeps on inching closer to the Holidays. It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is next week!!! If you have been keeping up with me over the last 7 weeks you should be about ready for Thanksgiving and just have to buy your Turkey and any last minute produce items!!! Doesn't if feel great to be prepared a whole week ahead of time!!!! Knowing that Thanksgiving is all taken care means we can move right along and start working on Christmas!!!

Last week you should have cooked at least 1 freezer meal. If you are just joining in on the fun you can take a look at some quick and easy ways to store away freezer meals for those crazy nights you know you are going to have in December.

But for this week lets put up the Christmas Cards and Family letter because we will want to work a little bit at a time on getting our homes cleaned up for our guests. Here is a neat little trick my Marine husband taught me: walk into a room and look right to left and jot down anything you see that needs to be cleaned or taken care of. Because our brains are trained to read left to right, when we look right to left we are more apt to notice details we would normally over look. Now applying that to house cleaning, I go through every room and make a list of things that I notice right away and then break that list down into a to do list with only 2 to 3 times per day. (Its also a good time to make a list of improvements you would like to do so that when winter comes you will have lots to keep you busy until it is time for Spring cleaning!!) But I am getting ahead of myself because we haven't even gotten to winter. Alright, lets refocus with this weeks list of things to do:

Freezer meal #2
Start buying postage for Christmas cards
if sending emails double check your address book to make sure they are current
Start planning Christmas dinner

Sew Much to Do: Week 13 More Curtains

Last year for CJ's birthday I started working on some special touches for her room but never got around to finishing them. So for the rest of November, I'm going to finish up her room!!!One of the first things I made for her was a valance. After I finished her valance, I knew I needed to make her some curtains because the afternoon sun baked her room. A couple of months ago I bought a hot pink sheet set so I could use the fitted sheet to cover her box spring but wasn't sure what to do with the flat sheet and pillow case. This past week it finally came to me!!!!!

The flat sheet was the perfect length to make curtains for CJ's room. I folded the flat sheet width wise together and cut it in half:

Next I folded the seam and adorned it with some rick rack.

Lastly I attached the sheets to the back of the valances and created a cute set of curtains.

Okay, now we have to get back to work. How are things going for you? Last week I asked you to come up with 5 freezer meal recipes. How did you do? Starting this week and continuing for the next 5 weeks, I want you to cook one meal and freeze it. This is going to be an emergency meal. We all know how busy it's going to get in December, so lets plan ahead and have some meals on hand to pull out and pop in the oven or crock pot so we don't waste any of our Christmas budget on eating out!!!! Here is my plan for my freezer meals:

(You can also do this all in once cooking session, whatever works best for you!)

Week 1: Hawaiian Chicken adapted from Don't Panic Dinner's in the Freezer
Label freezer bag with following directions: Thaw mixture and cook in crock pot on low for 4-5 hours or if frozen cook in crock pot for 7-8. Shred and serve over rice.
Next add following items to freezer bag and freeze.
6-8 Chicken breasts (frozen or fresh) I'm using frozen cause it is what is on hand.
1 can crushed pineapples
2 green bell peppers sliced
2T cornstarch
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 T soy sauce
1T lemon juice
to taste salt, ginger
dash of ground red pepper
*don't forget to cook rice on the day you serve this

Week 2: Lasagna
(We will be having lasagna this week so I am going to prepare two, one to cook and one to freeze.)
Use your favorite recipe but instead of baking it, freeze it. Southern Living has a great article on how to freeze lasagna. (For easy assembly, I'm going to use canned spaghetti sauce.)

Week 3: Turkey Enchiladas by Mom's Budget
Or any way you like to use up your Turkey leftovers. Simply slicing it for sandwiches would work as well!!!!

Week 4: Mexican Beef and Bean Crock Pot Meal adapted from Betty Crocker
Brown, drain and freeze 2 pds ground beef and season with chili powder, cumin, and onion powder.
Have on hand:
16 oz tomato sauce
2 cans pinto beans
1 can kidney beans
2 cups of chunky style salsa to your flavoring (we use mild)
On th day you want to serve this put ground beef in crock pot and add all on hand items and cook on low all day. I like to serve this with cornbread or corn chips and top with shredded M.Jack cheese

Week 5: Ham and Pineapple Sauce by Freezer Meals For Us
Cook and freeze Pineapple sauce with cooked sliced ham in same freezer bag. Cook pasta noodles of your choice, cool and freeze in different bag.
On day you are serving this meal, thaw sauce and noodles. While warming up sauce, boil a pot of water to warm up noodles by adding to boiling water for 1 minute and then draining noodles.Serve pasta with Ham and Pineapple Sauce.

And a quick no cook idea: Stop by your favorite pizza joint when pizzas are on sale and buy a couple to freeze. We love CiCi's Pizza and their carry out pizzas are a great price and cheaper than frozen pizzas at your local grocery store.

Sew Much to Do: Week 12

The fabric for this week's project was actually suppose to be a dress for another project. But seeing that fall is upon us and CJ really needed a bag for her Cubbie handbook, I decided to re-purpose that fabric for a cute bag that has been due her for over a year now!!!!!!! This bag is so easy to modify that you could use it for any book, especially one that you are giving away as a gift this Christmas!!!!!! So lets get started:

1. Take two pieces of fabric and put them right sides together.

Here is the dress ALMOST finished, I'm going to cut between the green stripes.

2. Cut out your fabric and ensure you have enough for the seam allowance. I wanted more on the top because I am going to fold down the top for an easy finish.

3. We are almost done!!! Fold down the top of both fabric pieces and then pin the sides and bottom together, fabric should still be right sides together. Now sew these three sides together leaving the top open and pin your handles to the top.

The pink ribbon is laid out to give you an idea of how long the handles can be.

Here the sides and bottom seams have been sewn.

4. When you sew the handles on you should sew on the inside of the bag so that you can open up the side seams for a nicer finish.

5. Now turn your bag right side out and if you want to stop at this point, I would go ahead and sew another line above the line you did to attach the handles and you are done.

6. I wanted to embellish the bag with a ruffle so I used some more fabric from the original dress to make my ruffle.

I only used one of these strips for my ruffle.

7. I tried a couple of methods but this worked best. I folded the fabric in what you could call thirds. So if you folded your fabric there would be one solid side and the top and bottom of the fabric would be on the opposite side. You would do this wrong sides together so the right side of the fabric is on the outside. (I hope this makes sense.)

8. Next I used this awesome gathering technique to make a ruffle........

9. Attached the ruffle to my bag by first tucking under my edge....

10.Then pinning the ruffle around the right side of my bag folding under the end just like I did at the beginning. I used a small straight stitch and stitched right down the center of the ruffle.

Testing the bag to make sure the Cubbie Handbook will fit.

It does!

Perfect!!!

Look at how happy she is!!!

Christmas Week 7: Freezer Fun

So are you freaking out a little? I am!!! Every year I wonder if I've forgotten something that will cause my well planned preparation to crumble into a big mess.

Okay, forgive me!! Thank you for letting me stress just a little!

Last week I encouraged you to get a spiral calendar for 2012 and I found one for myself at Dollar General. I also whipped up my Thanksgiving Dinner Menu since we WILL be at home after all. I have my shopping list divided into Pantry (buy after 1st of Nov), Freezer(buy after 15th of Nov) and Fresh (buy a few days before Thanksgiving.) This helps us keep within our normal food budget without destroying the rest of our budget.

Home style Turkey, the Michigander Way

Mashed Potatoes & Gravy (homemade)

Mac n Cheese (boxed)

Never Enough Green Bean Casserole

Cafeteria Carrot Soufflé

Dinner Rolls (store bought)

Homemade Apple Crumble (w/out almond meal & flaked coconut)

I also did a trial run of some things I am thinking about making and baking for Christmas gifts:

Make idea 1: Mini Christmas Stockings:

I didn't have a needle to hide the leftover yarn but it still looks cute!

Bake idea 1: Bread in a Can

I used cake mix instead of bread batter and it looks like I'll stick with the little cans! Everyone got to taste test at dinner and they all said it was a big hit!!!! I'll use card stock to decorate the cans after I've finished all my baking. I'll be perfect!

So with that, we are ready for Week 7: Stocking our freezer with meals for those busy nights during the holiday rush. There are lots of ways to do this and here are a few of my favorite ways!

One of the easiest ways to do this is double a dinner and freeze half of it.
Don't Panic, Dinner's in the Freezer has some great recipes to freeze and has a nifty double, triple, and on up on all their recipes!!!!
Make 5 Dinners in ONE hour has some awesome recipes as well as a free week sample. I subscribe to her menu planners and they are a life saver not only for cooking time but shopping as well!!!!
Or try a new recipe! Head on over to $5 Dinner Mom and try out her yummy Golden Raisin- Apple Stuffing Cups. Thanks Erin for joining in on our holiday preparation!!!

You also need to pull out your pantry shopping list and buy any items you don't already have on hand. I like to beat the rush and have what I need right at the beginning of November.

Take this easy week to finalize your Make and Bake list. We want to give ourselves enough time to joyfully make and bake all these items. Our bake day wont be until December but you can still make a grocery list of all the ingredients and supplies you will need. We will go shopping for these after December 1st!!!

Sew Much To Do Week 11: A hem

Is it really a dream if it doesn't cost you anything?

If NO sacrifice is made on your part?

As I am jotting down my post, at last minute, I am understanding that the only thing standing between my sewing and my dream is M-E!!!! I can do this if I just keep moving in that direction. No matter how big or small the gesture; it will move me closer to I CAN and farther from I CAN'T!! Which is what I did when I took three pair of pants and told my friend that I could hem them for her!!!!! I'm really excited that you can't tell which hem is the original hem and which one I did!!!

I am going to attempt to show you how easy hemming is. Hang in, the pictures get alot better!!

1. I am starting my stitch between the original hem threads. I will knot my thread and pull it through from the bottom side of the hem to the top. Test your knot to make sure you thread will not pull through.

2. Once I know my knot is secure I will go back into the fabric below the first stitch BUT not through the pant leg yet!

3. This is where I am going to secure the hem to the pant leg by picking up a small amount of fabric and pulling my thread and needle through the pant leg.

4. Above shows a couple of stitches. You want just enough of the pant leg so that you can pull your thread through and secure your hem and no more. After you pull through your pant leg you need to go back into the top of the hem and start your stitch over again.

5. Here I am going into the bottom of the hem and will pick up a little bit of the pant leg and work my way around the rest of the hem line.

6. The reason you want to pick up just a small amount of fabric in the pant leg is because you will be making little tics on the outside of your pant leg. When you use coordinating thread you can't even tell. I used black so you could see what I was talking about.

7. Once you get to the end of your hem line and the hem is secure, you just tie another knot in your thread and you're finished!!!!

Now that November is upon us and my dress is on hold, since we are not going to the ball, I thought it would be fun to high light some fun Christmas projects I'll be working on in November.

1. Simple Draw-String Bag will replace wrapping paper this year.

2. Gift Card Cozy is a personal touch for those occasions you want to hand out a gift card.

3. A quick apron to go with some yummy cookies or fudge?

4. Christmas Stockings hung with care!!!

Planning to Save: Week 8

Okay, its time to bring out the Master Christmas Card Roster and get all that information you didn't get filled in on Week 12. My goal is to have all our Christmas Cards done before Thanksgiving!!! Hey you think that is crazy? I know a friend who has hers done by Halloween!!!!!!!

Next thing on our list is to set our budge!!!! To do this you are going to need to write down everyone you think you want to give or make a gift for and put a cap on what you are willing to spend per person. If you have young children, set a limit of what you are going to spend on them. Once you get all these numbers plugged in, add them up and see what the total is. Be honest with yourself: is it realistic? If it isn't, adjust!!!! Once you work out your number, make a contract with yourself and/or spouse committing to that amount. Print it out, sign and date it and hang it up where you both can see it every day from now until Christmas. You can also get an index card and put that total on it and every time you buy something, subtract it from your total so you see your Christmas fund going down and hopefully ward off all the impulse buying.

Next we are going to work on our game plan for making and baking Christmas gifts. The Happy House Wife is doing an awesome series on Christmas gifts you can make and well worth looking into. Some of my other favorite Craft sites are Make and Takes, Moda Bake Shop, and Sweet Verbena just to name a few. And don't over look baking gifts!! Last year I did fudge and Cookies in a Jar. This year I will be trying Bread in a Can. I've been saving my aluminum cans and lids for the last couple of months. Once we get our Christmas picture, I will show you what I am planning on doing with the lids to accompany the bread!!!!! Until then, go have fun and look around for some creative ways to let your family and friends know you are thinking about them; without breaking the bank!!!!

Sew Much To Do: Week 10

My sewing room is slowly being changed into a temporary room for two children we were given custody of on Friday. Everything is still up in the air so we are not sure how long this will be. So in an effort to help make the children welcome in our home, I did not have any chance to work on any projects this weekend except making them feel welcome and adjusting to the increase in our household. I hope to be back next week with a little something to show you. We shall see!!!! Thanks for your understanding L2L

The Reality of Delusion

I would have one week of understanding the indescribable joy of knowing you have life within your body. It was just when I was so comfortable with this thought; that my journey really begins. I remember waking up and not feeling well and when I went to the bathroom I noticed that I was bleeding. I think I felt my heart stop. One big blessing in all this is that it was Saturday, so my husband was home and we headed to the ER.

That seemed like the longest day of my life. The wait for the doctor to take blood, do an exam and then comfirm the heart breaking news that I had miscarried. I knew in my heart what had happened and I blamed myself. It was my fault for taking those diet pills and exercising like crazy to get rid of the 5 extra pounds that had me close to my weight limit. Why hadn't it E-V-E-R crossed my mind that I was pregnant?

And then the attack from the enemy came:

"He doesn't love you. Look, look at what he has once again allowed to happen to you."

"Oh, my child do you hear me?"

"Don't listen to Him!! Why bother with Him now. Where was He when you needed Him most? Ask Him!

"Oh, my daughter I have never left you and have been right there with you, just as I am now."

"Really, well ask Him this: Why? Why did did He give you this baby to just rip out your heart by taking it away from you! Ask Him that!"

Have you ever wondered when it is that a person goes from sanity to insane? I truly feel that I met with that chance on that day. There was a war going on within me. A war that was greater than I could have ever understood until I look back.I had a choice to make and the rest of my life depended on it. Satan was taking some low blows. Reminding me of my past and pouring salt on my freshly opened wounds. He was going in for the kill. Every time he spoke, my mind was filled with chaos and confusion. I couldn't think straight. But then there was that other voice. It called me, beckoning me closer. There was a familiarity about His voice. I didn't know it but then again I did?!?! It could not be ignored. "Yes, Father?" my heart cried out.

Are you really going to believe Him? Don't do that!!! Look at what He has done to you every time you trusted in Him. He crushed you, broke your heart and you want to listen to Him? Even now AFTER He took your baby! Really?!?!

I don't really know how long this we on but one after another Satan spit out lie after lie. Looking back I realize that God did not argue. All He did was call my name. Now the battle had come down to me. There I laid in that bed, sobbing, heartbroken and terrified that I was on the verge of losing my sanity but did I care. My very reason for living was gone now. Would it really matter if I went completely off the deep end. Would it be easier to deal with the pain that was so overwhelming?! I could barely stand to take a breath. Then His voice melted away everything right then and there.

"My daughter, I am with you!"

"God, that's you! Oh God, I hurt oh I am so broken and just don't want to do this anymore. Take it all away!"

This week will either be fun or stressful. For me it will be a little stressful because I completely forgot a lesson learned several years ago when it come to drafting up our Family Letter. So I will share it with you in hopes that you might benefit as well next year. I have found that it is easier to write up our family letter when I have a calendar in front of me that I have noted all our family activities. But I never keep those calendar pages unless it has a spiral binding and you can't just tear off the pages. They already have the 2012 calendars out and I even saw one at the Dollar Store. So if you can, go get one this week to help you out next Christmas. But if you are like me you will need the next 2 weeks to help figure out what you are going to add into your Christmas Letter. Take your time and make sure you make it fit the personality of your own family.

One year I had a friend who sent a page of pictures showing what her family did that year and it was fun to look at. You can recap the highlights of each family member's year or write a joint family letter. Whatever puts your family in the homes of those you send it to is what you want to do. In fact you don't even have to send a snail mail letter. You can email it, blog it or even start up a Christmas Blog for your family and send out the link!! Here is my blog post for 2009 and 2010.

If you like to send the photo cards for Christmas start thinking about the photo you will be using. Do you need to make an appointment for a professional photo or will you have a friend snap it for you? One of my favorite things to do is edit the photo in paint and then print the picture off at my local print shop.

And the final thing you need to do this week is to print off or write out all the recipes you will be using for your Thanksgiving dinner. And that will move us one step closer to having a stress reduced Christmas celebration!!!

Sew Much To Do: Week 9

Say hello to my new friends!!!!

This week was all about fundamentals. I didn't even touch my sewing machine because we are in the process of changing the boys room into my sewing room and the family room into their new boy cave.

In the process of painting.

Yeah, this is what their room looks like normally and it is driving me crazy!

I moved my sewing items into their room and

some of their toys and clothes into the old family room.

But with the ball soon approaching I couldn't just do nothing. So I have been reading and rereading and reading again the directions to my pattern. I have been ironing like it aint crazy and cutting like there is no tomorrow. After I cut the gown out and marked all those little details that make a big difference in assembling a garment, I put the pieces together to visualize how I am going to sew them together to get a feel of how the dress is put together. This has helped me alot and I'm going to be alot more confident to get my sewing machine fired up next week!!!

Stocking Up

Alright, its time to get down to the planning part of our 12 Weeks till Christmas. This week I want you to start thinking about what you will be cooking for Thanksgiving and start gathering your recipes. Our goal is to make a list of all pantry items that we can buy ahead of time. There are many different resources out there for wonderful Turkey Day recipes, just Google Thanksgiving recipes and you will have an slew of sites to chose from.

For me personally, my first successfully turkey was when I used the recipe Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way from allrecipes.com. I also like to do the basics of mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, mac and cheese, dinner rolls, apple crumble and sweet tea!!!! I know it isn't too fancy but its all our family favorites.

There are tons of ways to organize your recipes. The first year I did 12 Weeks to Christmas I printed off my recipes and used contact paper to laminate them. Then when I started cooking I wrote down the start and done times on the different recipes with a white board marker. The next year I didn't have to worry about cooking because we visited family for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year we will be visiting for Thanksgiving but not Christmas. So although I wont have to worry about Thanksgiving Dinner I will be preparing Christmas dinner. And this year I will be using my much loved, don't know how I did without Big Oven!!!!!! Big Oven is awesome in Meal Planning because it not only stores your recipes while making a weekly or monthly menu planner, it also makes a grocery list!!!!!! And because Big Oven is online, you can also get the ingredients to any recipe you publish with your program anywhere you can get online. So if you have a fancy cell phone, I don't, you can pull up your account and get a grocery list right there in the store. How cool is that!!!! Well worth looking into if you are wanting to stream line recipes and meal planning.

I did it: Pantry Door Project

So, you might have noticed I have a list of projects I would like to do in my right column, you know for all those things I will never find the time to do!!!! But I did find time to do the Pantry Door Project and boy oh boy am I glad!!!

I didn't do a pantry door. Nope instead I tried this out on the windows on my garage door and it turned out amazing!!!! Thanks Thrifty Decor Chick, my husband is so impressed!!!!!! So here is how my project went down!!!

I see you, you see me. We just weren't big fans of people being able to see into our garage and during the winter I work out in there and N-O O-N-E wants to see that!!!!!!

I gathered a couple of supplies: towel, ruler, scissors, glass cleaner, scraper and clear contact paper.

Thankfully this went rather quickly since all the windows measured the same. I just cleaned the windows, peeled the backing off the contact paper (don't sweat if it creases those went away in about 3 days!!!) and squirted the window cleaner on the contact paper and then on the window. Next I slapped the contact paper on the window and used the scraper to smooth out the paper and push out all the glass cleaner and then I stepped back and marveled at my work!!!!

Isn't the difference amazing!!!

It was super easy and got all these done in less than 10 minutes!

What we like the most about this project is you can't really tell anything is on the windows from the street. It's only when you try to look into our garage that you realize you can't see in!!!

Wow, has it really been 8 weeks since I set out to weekly blog my sewing projects?!? I've had this project in my mind for a couple of weeks. I was able to use all scrap fabric for this and I tried out a gathering tip and it worked amazingly!!!! So here is what I was up to this weekend!!!

Wow I can't believe that it is almost 12 weeks to Christmas again!!!!!!

Are you ready to get started with planning and organizing for Christmas with me? I hope so. I learned so much last year and hope to apply that knowledge to all we are about to do this year!!!!

It's time to get out those Christmas Cards from last year and make any changes or additions you need to your Master Roster. Don't have one, then let's work on this it little by little. First decide who you want to send Christmas Cards to and fill in their names and any information you already have. Sew Much To Do: Week 6

Well this week has ushered in what will be a very busy month of sewing for me but before I get to that I wanted to share with you what I worked on this weekend. A quick project that I saw somewhere else but did not save the link. I'm certain theirs was fancier than mine but hey I made it and I'm proud of it, lol.

Okay so I did buy the felt for this project, it was 5 for $1, I couldn't resist!!! And the princess ziploc bags were purchased by my mom at The Dollar Store. So 20 cents for this whole project is really good!!!

The only disadvantage to this felt was that it wasn't quit long enough but thankfully I was able to use the excess in the width for binding the bags.

I decided to go ahead and cut the bags so that the ends wouldn't show.

Not sure if you can see but I folded under the excess and sandwiched the bags between the felt.

Pinned and ready to sew a straight stitch right down the middle!!!!

Making sure the book will fold in half okay, Check!

Pockets secured, Check!!!!

Activity bag completed, Check!!!! Now to come up with some ideas of things to put in it for CJ to quietly do during service?!?!?!

I'm very excited to say that I had a friend ask me to make a costume for her 4 year old son for Halloween. She doesn't want him to look like everyone else and she wants it to be kid friendly. We were talking about a magician but after checking out a book at the library I think I will have to ask her what she thinks of a wizard or a clown or a king. Oh what fun, right!!!1 The next thing I will working on is my dress for the Marine Corps Ball. I am torn between view A and view C ?!?! Can't wait to share which one I chose!!! And I also can't wait for you to share with me, what you have been working on!!!!!

Sew Much To Do: Week 5

Some dreams are worth the fuss of their reality. That was the case today!!!! I had the hardest time making bias tape to coordinate with a dress I am making. So much so that I didn't fully complete the bias tape but thankfully this will still work as the pattern requires you to open up the single bias tape half way. My troubles started right from the beginning!!!! (Note to self, when making 1/2 in bias tape, cut 1 1/4 inches wide)

It took me a couple of times to remember how to join the fabric. (this way wasn't working for me)

This way worked much better however, there had to be a H-O-W-E-V-E-R!!!!!

When I switched the way I was sewing the fabric together, I flipped the fabric already sew together, so I had to cut my bias tape in half..... sigh

I thought it would be smooth sailing at this point because of my handy dandy bias folder

B-U-T noooooo, this is where I remembered that I needed to cut my strips into 1 1/4 inches instead of 1 inch

But all in all, after taking a breather, reading the instructions and just ironing one side down, mission accomplished. I'm hoping this will be enough but if not I have fabric sewn together waiting to be used!!!!

Any suggestions on making bias tape. I really think my issue was the type of fabric I chose. But I am all ears to any tips you use!!! And don't forget to share what sewing project you are working on!!!!!!

Sew Much To Do: Week 4

Leave it to me to make something more difficult than it has to be!!! Remember last week when I told you how I burned the midnight oil completing my curtains so I would have a project to post. Well it dawned on me a couple of days ago that I had a dress finished and just waiting for me to post about!!!! It is a dress from New Look Pattern 6745. This isn't the first time I have used this pattern. I actually made CJ a Sponge Bob dress when she was 2 and she loved it. If you look closely you can see I had no idea what I was doing with the binding around the neck line, nor the arm holes for that matter.

My goal this time around was to get the binding right and also work with the button hole setting on my sewing machine. I did a great job on the button holes but will take the time to mark placement of the buttons instead of trying to eye where they need to be sewn on. All in all, I think it turned out nicely!!!!!

I already have two more projects I am hoping to finish September strong with. One will be a dress from McCalls Pattern M4422 and the other will be my own creation of sorts!!! They had us all lined up for the seasonal flu shot. It was something, I hated to get but had no choice now that I was government property. Hey that's what you are for 8 years. Anyway, as I finally made my way to the front of the line, there was a sign that read: "If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, please let the Corpsmen know."

Alot of bells started to go off in my head and things started to make sense. The inability to lose 5 pounds, 3 of which now had my 5'6" self out of regulations at a whooping 148 I was now overweight by Marine Corps standards. And although I hadn't missed a period, they were lighter and not like they use to be. So, I told the Corpsman that I thought I was pregnant and they sent me to get a test. Those were the longest 45 minutes of my life. Everything in the military life was always hurry up and then wait. But finally the tech handed me the white piece of paper and it said positive. I just looked at him and said, "Positive well what does that mean? Is it good or bad?" "Well that depends," the tech replied. "Do you want to be pregnant?" I just shook my head yes. "Then its good, congratulations." Wow, I was pregnant!!!

I was shocked......scared..........happy.........confused.....relieved!!!!! I headed back to the shot table and gave them a copy of my result and then headed back to my office to show my SSGT. I showed him the paper and honestly I think he was relieved for two reasons: 1) it explained my weight gain and 2) I was married. Our office had just went through a crazy year "all because another female Marine had gotten pregnant." (their words not mine) The pregnancy had made her extremely sick and she had lost weight, not gained it. After she had the baby she was able to get out of the Marine Corps. Its much harder to do that now but it use to be the norm and not the exception. (I share this, just to give you an idea of what life is like for females in the military, or at least the Marine Corps)

My husband was also a Marine but away at school at the time. He came home on the weekends so I couldn't wait to tell him but he already knew?!?! He said that the week before I had the "pregnancy glow." I spent all that week doing the paperwork dance with the military. So much fun and just when I had grown use to the idea of being pregnant, my world would turn upside down and I would no longer be the same.........

Sew Much To Do: Week 3

Last week I gave you a sneak peek at a T-shirt dress I made for CJ. And here she is showing it off on the float.

I used a Parksbird Pattern for the circular skirt and added the pink bow to match her sleeves...

Speaking of sleeves, I got the idea from Whitney Sews tutorial!!!!

This is my favorite pick from the parade, her natural smile and those puffy clouds!!!

So on to the next project I literally just finished. I was determined to get these done and I did! A bit late but all worth it now that they are done!!!! I had been wanting to do something with these very boring curtains for a long long time. The length was wrong and I didn't like how thin they were since they hung in our bathroom.

And then I got my inspiration from Busy Lizzy's Shirred Baby Dress!!!! But would it work?!? I started with 3 rows but found that I would need to add two more on the ends of each panel. I just eyed this part and went from the top of the curtain to the bottom on my longest stitch. I did NOT back-stitch and made sure to leave a long tail to work with.

This is the three rows in the middle before I added the other two rows.

Next I very gently, gathered the fabric from the bottom to the middle of the curtain. Go slow!!!

Then I work my way to the middle from the top of the curtains. (When I do this again I will tie off the tops before I gather.)

Next I checked my length. This is where I realized I needed to add the extra rows on the ends of each panel as well as the top ruffle.

Once I got each panel where I wanted it, I tied off the tops and bottoms of each row by pulling the top thread through to the back side of the fabric and triple knotting it.

Not the greatest picture but I think you get the idea. I reworked the ruffles for a better picture and of course my battery died. I love how the curtain looks totally different and creates more privacy because it isn't so thin anymore!!!!!

And did you know that September is National Sewing Month?

So get out those sewing machines and get to work.

Sew Much To Do: Week 2

Back in June, CJ participated in the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival Pageant with one of her little dance friends.

The pageant had 3 outfit changes, one of them being casual wear. Here is how the outfit began:

Just a simple white T-shirt that I embellished with a C that I blinged out. But I wanted to do a bit more so then I added puffy sleeves.....

You can see the sleeves here and her adorable Cary Hairbows to match!!!!!

Unfortunately, we had to evacuate our home on Friday because of Hurricane Irene. I do not have access to the pictures of what the entire outfit looked like on pageant day. Once I am back home I will post pictures of pageant day AND the alterations I made for her parade outfit. Since CJ was 1st Runner Up she got to be on the Queens float as apart of the royal court. She had lots of fun and looked totally adorable!!!! Thanks for your patience and I look forward to seeing what has had your bobbin spinning!!!!

It looks like Irene is coming right at us!!!! So that means we are packing up the car, at least the kids and I, and headed inland. I'm hoping this will just be a weekend trip but you just never know. I've packed up the kids lessons and we are ready to hit the road early in the AM. So if you think about us, say a prayer!!!

Sew Much To Do: Week 1

Okay, so I have a dream...... a big dream!!!!!! To one day sew professionally, as in earn an income when my husband retires!!!!! And big dreams happen with little steps, right!!! So I've decide over the next year to sew something each week. Not sure if I am biting off too much but I need to do something, anything to keep me in the direction of my dream. So since they say practice makes perfect, lets get started!!!!!

We moved back to the States last year and have ~~spent~~ invested A-LOT of money in our home. More than we imagined because our shipment was damaged. So my goal this year is to curb the spending and just make due with what I already have. And that is where the idea for my first project bloomed!!!! As you can see the pillow shames were just too big for our standard pillows!!!

So I turned them wrong side out, and studied and studied and studied and it came to me!!!! Cut the sides off to match the top and bottom seams already sewn.

Then I flipped the pillow case right side out and cut off the trim; so much for using the seams already there!! I have a great idea for those ruffles..... can't wait to show you.... just as soon as I get them sewn!!!

This pillow case already has an opening in the back so I can just sew, or serger like I did, and go!

I even up-ed my cuts.

Pinned the sides in place.

And serged. That was what this project was all about: getting to know my serger.
Tip: If you are new at serging, make your seam line with a straight stitch and then finish off the edges with your serger.

You will have to wait until I finish with the ruffles to see the whole room! Until then, would love to see what has your needles in motion!!!!

That is how many emails I just finished deleting. And you wonder why I don't email you back, lol. I didn't even know my little account could hold that many, but I guess it can. I also have a feeling that if I haven't gotten back to you since 2008, ya know I'm not going to respond. I wish we could just go back to the good old days of a simple phone call or prehistoric and actually write out a note. Ha!!!!

What will you tell your children? My first son was born one week after 9-11 and is always a sobering reminder of what so many people lost. I honestly don't remember much about that 1st year because it was so overwhelming for me. I was on terminal leave, had my first child, developed Postpartum, moved to a new state, on pins and needles about getting recalled and looking at the reality of my husband being deployed. BTW, he was.

And although I did not know a single person who lost their lives on that horrific day, I do know families and friends who lost their lives in the war that followed. And as a military spouse my life forever changed because our nation was and is still at war. A nation being protected by ordinary people being asked to do extraordinary things!!! Just like every survivor of 9-11 and their families and friends left behind. Ordinary people being asked to continue their lives without the ones they love: Yes that is an extraordinary expectation.

So again I ask you, what will you tell your children about 9-11? For me I will let the facts speak for themselves and let the Holy Spirit continue to mend the broken hearts!!!

I don't mind washing and drying clothes but folding and putting them away is my stumbling block, until today!!!!

As I turned my children's socks right side out, two thoughts popped into my head:

IF they were right side out to begin with they would be alot cleaner
What IF I prayed for the little feet that will be walking in these. Specifially pray that their feet stay on the straight and narrow path, that they are not entangled by the sins that are so easily claiming the freedom Christ has given each of our children. This is my mission field, this is my call of duty.

Simply to pray now for the future of my children. Will you join me!!!!! What other moments have you come across and God has given you a battle plan of prayer that you can say over your family? Let us join together, in one accord and lift up our families to the Great Almighty. After all we CAN reclaim America as a nation after God's Own Heart, one family at a time, one prayer at a time, one mom at a time. Let us not grow weary in the task He has set before us!!!!

Little Things

are impacting our hearts greatly around the house. And because I don't want to forget where the transformation in our home took place, I'm going to write them down to share with you and for keepsake for future generations. They say history repeats itself and I want our history to be His-Story!!!!

The first change was very subtle and caught me off guard. It simply began with my wonderful husband opening his bible each night after dinner and reading a verse or two from the same chapter of Proverbs that went with that days date.

Within 3 days of doing this, I honestly didn't think it would last, God opened the eyes of our family and we saw how we were talking to each other was just plain awful. The children were bickering and screaming at each other. They were arguing with us and being boldly disrespectful. How we got to this point, we are not sure. By all means it wasn't planned or intentional and maybe that right there was the issue. There was no intent in how we spoke to each other. So for the last two weeks or so we have been working very hard on speaking to each other with lots of grace, patience and forgiveness.

The last little thing we started to do is hold hands when we bless our food. Such a small act of fellowship is reaping huge benefits in uniting our family.

And as God is opening the eyes to what else we can do to improve our family, I will continue to write them down so that when my children as why do we do this, they will know the importance of the little things!!!

Quiz or Exam

So God revealed something really amazing to me last week and now I think he is giving me a pop quiz. At least that is what I hope it is cause if it is a final exam, I'm sure to fail!!!!

I'm going to be busy over on my homeschool blog MorningStar Academy. So if you have ever been curious as to what on earth I teach my children, check in daily as I give a review on all the stuff we use!!!

I've also started yet another blog Letters To My Children. Since I don't have a good camera I decided that is no reason I can't capture the memories of my children for them to relish when they are older!!! I've decided to write a letter daily to one of my children and capture something meaningful that has happened in their lives that week. Okay, you think no biggie, right. Weeeeellllllll, MIM is only an eight week course.

Yeah and it gets better, I just am finally getting to the last week of the study.

Bad cause I should have finished it along time ago BUT good cause I am actually finishing!!

How thankful I am that God never disappoints even after ever single one of my failures, His love is not what changes BUT I am!!!!!

Brought to tears

As I am enjoying a summer break and a blog break I've taken to reading a bit more, now that I have the time. And this week JJ and CJ are enjoying another VBS at a local church. They are having a blast and I am taking advantage of the time by sitting in the pews reading my copy of Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand the founder of VOM. Only one other book has brought me to tears and that was Safely Home by Randy Alcorn. Although the later is fiction, it brought to life the reality the love of Christ our brothers and sisters who are being persecuted have.

Tortured for Christ is also opening my heart in a way never imagined as I see my neglect of our fellow Christian brothers and sisters who, for the sake of the advancement of the gospel, are being tortured beyond our comprehension as we sit back so comfortably and neglect our support of them through the most powerful weapon, prayer!!!! I've still much to go in this book but wanted to let you know that you can get a free copy when you visit Tortured for Christ or go to VOM's Persecution to learn about the persecution that is taking place and how you can help!!!!! There were many lessons I would have to learn as a newlywed. It was hard to relate to my husband as I didn't really grow up with a man in the house. I had been taught that men and women were equal.... or rather anything a man could do, a woman could do better. You can see how this train of thought would under mind a marriage from the get go. And fanning the flame even more was my career in the Marine Corps, where daily I was having to prove my worthiness to the men in the office. My mind was twisted and I had so many internal wars going on, it was a miracle that we made it past the first year. It was during this time that I went from a knowledge of God to knowing God. And I can remember clear as day the moment I made that conversion........

To fully understand my story, my testimony we need to go back to the event that helped me take that leap forward into adulthood minus my mother and got me walking on my path to God.

On the outside, I was a tough, take no crap kinda girl. But it was all a defense. My heart had been battered, betrayed and broken so many times that deep within me was still this little girl only wanting approval and affection. And to make matters worse, I had joined the military. And from my personal experience and the stories I heard from every girl I went to boot camp with, we were all there to get away from something. How heart broken it is, looking back, to see us all there just wanting acceptance and validation. But boot camp also offered me something I had never had before, the chance to go to church every week. So what should have been a spiritual spring board for me, ended up being a spiral down the dark tunnel of guilt and shame also known as condemnation.

Many years later I would learn, through God's Holy Word, that this was an attempt from Satan to keep me prisoner to the past!!! And a few years after this revelation I would learn that God does not dwell in the past. But at this moment in my life things weren't going how I had planned. I didn't get stationed where I had wanted. (Complete intervention from God!!!) I was newly wed, marriage had been on my NOT to do list, and issues from my past were flooding to the surface. To the world I was a newly married woman but on the inside I was one very confused little girl.

And things hadn't even gotten to its worst point yet!!!

VBS starts for our church today and we are so excited to begin the Big Apple Adventure.

Big Apple Adventure is by Lifeway, so I'm wanting to know what curriculm is your church using and do you like it? I've heard of Group, which I love, and also saw that Answers in Genesis now had a VBS program and also saw that Voice of the Martyrs has one as well!!!! Any other programs out there I haven't listed???

Not Forgotten

Nothing grabs your attention more than the Lord talking to you. Especially when you haven't been talking to him. I was saved at an early age. Around 8ish but because my mother and I soon moved after that heart transforming even, I never grew. I didn't go to church much, I didn't pray, I didn't know Jesus and had an "idea" of who God was.

I remember well the day God spoke to me about Big Daddy. I was walking, with a friend, back to our barracks room and he was sitting outside his room, drinking a beer, head down and displaying no acknowledgement of my existence. Sulley and I had just come back from eating at Denny's and as clear as day; within my mind "You will marry this man" broke through the idle chatter and almost knocked me off balance. I stuttered ...... stumbled ...... giggled and kept right on walking.

It's amazing what God will do to get your attention!!!

It's amazing how God answers the prayers of so many years before, even after they are forgotten.

Yes, this is why I ~~want~~ have to look back. To see the beauty in my ashes.

Looking back I wonder: "Why was it so much easier to hear God back then than it is now?" You would think it would be the other way around. And I was about to learn how difficult it would become when you start listening to God ....

CJ had a blast at her first pageant and says she wants to do it again next year ONLY if she can have a purple dress. I think I can live with that. CJ stole my heart when she looked at me and said, "Mama, it's okay if I don't get the crown." I just wish all the other contestants had such a humble heart and pray that you, my precious child, never lose it. You are amazing inside and out!!!! We are so proud that you placed 1st Runner Up and received the Photogenic Award!!! Life with you is a blast, can't wait to experience more firsts with you!!!!

And a special thanks to Amber for capturing my beautiful girl so perfectly and Shannon for wonderful hair bows to complete each outfit perfectly. Can't wait to work with both of you again next year!!!!

Mr. Who?

At an early age I understood the sacrifices my mom made for me. For the most part I was sensitive to the financial burden of having only one parent. I remember during my freshman year trying out for the cheer-leading team. I went through most of the week and then some how in conversation the cost of cheering came out. I gracefully backed out because I didn't want to have to tell my mom how much it would be. I also remember having a tooth pulled from my over crowed mouth and getting a marlin bridge put in because it was cheaper than braces. (I regretted that so much!!!!) And I also remember wanting so badly to ask about my father but didn't want to hurt my mom's feelings, so I never asked. I could tell story after story of how I never really said what was on my mind because I didn't want to hurt someone else and yet all the while it was tearing me up inside.

I don't think I have to spell out the wrong choices I made as I went out into the world looking for Mr. Right. Looking back, I see it wasn't Mr.Right I was looking for just someone to value me in the way my father hadn't. I didn't have any standard to measure a man by so I had no clue as to what I was looking for. So I'll spare you the details of each Mr. Wrong and and move on to the day I was introduced to my Mr. Right......

Yep this bundle of spunk and energy has joined our family in reading at the young age of 4.5!!!! It has been a great thrill in being the one who has lead each of my children down the path of literacy. I hesitate to say I taught them how to read because it seems like something they each figured out in their own timing; I just gave them the tools to achieve it!!!!!

Looking back I always chuckle because I was such a wreck when it came time to teach LJ how to read. And guess what I didn't teach him, I stressed him and myself out. It wasn't until I stepped back and let him process all the information I had given him was he able to relax, breath and start to read. So when LJ came along, I taught him the ABC song and had no interest in doing any formal lessons until I caught him sitting in front of our ABC chart pointing and singing the ABC song. So the most formal thing I did with him was assign each letter a verse and printed out a color sheet for each. CJ had the most formal introduction to letters this year through our homeschool group ECHO. And for the last several weeks she has been begging to read. So I popped out our Bob Books and had her start sounding out the letters and wouldn't you know it she put the sounds together!!!!! Even teaching the kids their alphabet was different. LJ and I did a dinosaur study. JJ taught himself by sitting in front of a chart, singing the ABC song until he connected each letter and CJ learned with print offs.

But teaching my children goes beyond the letters and the numbers, it reaches deep down within in them. It's covering them in prayer and asking God's counsel on who H-E wants them to be and how I can help train them up in the way H-E would have them go!!!! The world teaches us we can be whatever we want to be, but I want my children to seek out what God wants them to be!!!! It means helping them, from their earliest years, to yield to God and not their flesh. And that is why we chose the International Children's Bible as one of the first bibles they get!!!! We start off with reading it to them and then as they show ability we have them read it to us aloud. This may sound crazy but I see their vocabulary and reading comprehension soar through the roof after they begin reading their bibles. It's like seeing God's Word in action:

Matthew 6:33 (ICB) The thing you should want most is God's kingdom and doing what God wants. Then all these other things you need will be given to you.

Matthew 6:33 (NIV) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33 (KJV) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

and how thankful I am that I don't have to do this perfectly!!!! After all it is through our worst that God does his best!!!!!! Philippians 1:5-7

Full Circle

Sunday was am amazing reminder of what happens when we set aside our plans and just follow God's leading. It all started when I showed up at church for Fun in the Son without a single thing to teach and then only had one child to teach. My first impulse was to have her sit in the sanctuary with the adults after all she was just one child and I didn't have anything to teach her. But there wasn't peace in my heart with this so I went to our Youth director's office and we looked around for A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G to teach. Finally we decided on the cd for VBS and I was going to talk with her about the importance of prayer........ but this didn't bring me peace either. So, inside I threw my hands up and quickly quipped at the Lord:

"What do you want me to teach?!"

"The plan of salvation", He said.

"Great, I don't even have my Bible. How can I do that?!?!"

"Use the VBS curriculum for ABC", He continued with great patience.

So I took out some paper and together we drew a fancy A,B & C. We talked about what we needed to admit: that we are sinners. What we needed to believe: that Jesus is the only way to God. What it meant to confess that Jesus is Lord. We talked about angels and Satan and the Book of Life and what it meant to have your name in it. It was at that point the little girl looked me in the eyes and said, "So, you are telling me if I ask Jesus in my life then I wont go to hell?" "Yes, once you have accepted Jesus as your Savior your name is written in the Book of Life and can never be removed." "Well," she answered "I want my name in the book of life." "Would you like to pray and ask Jesus into your heart?" "Yes, can you help me?" "Well, remember that you need to admit that you are a sinner and you know the only way to God is through His Son Jesus and you want Jesus to come be in your heart. But it's something you need to say on your own, you can't just repeat what I say."

And she did, in her child like faith and she reminded me of another little girl who around the same age asked Jesus into her heart; not really knowing what that meant but knowing it was something that my soul ~~wanted~~ needed!!! All my doubts about the sincerity of this little girl's prayer melted away!!! My work in this little girl's life is done and I will most likely never see her again because she is moving on Wednesday. But God, His work has just begun and if He could take the likes of me and use me in the battle of His glory!!!!! Then Y-E-S, I rest in complete confidence that she is in good hands and marvel at how my life has come full circle, BUT now I am the Sunday School teacher being used by God to further His kingdom!!

Guilt, what a monster

I knew he wasn't coming.

After I had spent several months excited and nervous beyond all get up that I would finally meet my father, he sent a letter saying he wouldn't be able to make it. And even though my mom had spent every moment of her life making sure I knew how much she loved me and how I was her world, it just wasn't enough anymore. Why a little girl so desperately needs the love, affection and approval of her father I don't know. I do know what it feels like not to get it and how when you don't have it you begin to tell yourself lies to lessen the ache of your heart.

"You don't really need him." - "You are better off without him." - "It's his loss not yours"

So after graduation, I sat down and wrote a very nasty letter to him. Needless to say, I never heard from him again. Whatever bridge of communication had been in the making was demolished and a fragile little girl was left devastated in a sea of rejection. So here I am, a young 18 year old, who has no confidence in herself, unsure of her worthiness and about to take her first independent steps into the world. To say the ride is about to get bumpy is an understatement!!!!

Way back in March, and a bit too early, we decided to plant some gardens!!!!

Since then we have harvested lettuce...

watched our zucchini grow.... ( I think that is what that is??)

grown marigolds and stalks of corn....

harvested zucchini a little too soon.....

watched cantaloupe grow

and tomatoes grow

been stung by a bee while trying to pick strawberries....

and watched our sunflowers get really really huge!!!!

Hands down I think sunflowers are the prettiest flower!!! How beautiful against the morning Carolina sky!!

But there is a thief among our bliss who's not afraid of our scarecrow

And if I didn't know better...... (that's a tomato it left behind)

I'd say, its taunting us!!!!! (It "left" another tomato on top of our baseball pole)

let's just say this is far from over!!!!!

Are you wondering why I am so willing to share my journey, the good and the ugly of it all, with you?

Will it be worth it?

Can I become vulnerable to ~~my readers~~ to myself?

What can I possibly gain in rehashing the past?

I don't have stories of old to pass down or to learn from and I want that for my children. I want my children to know their heritage both bad and good, to have a story to tell and M-O-S-T importantly I want to pass on the story of my miry clay and how God picked me up from my ashes and made me beautiful again!!! I want to show them that, by God's grace, their father and I built the foundations of our family upon His Son, Jesus Christ our Corner Stone in obedience to God's perfect and unfailing will.

I share so that none of His glorious works will be forgotten!

It would be accurate to say that my spiral downwards began on what most would consider a joyous occasion. Excitement was stirring in the air as everyone got into their proper place for the procession. We had been warned that any shenanigans would delay us in receiving our diplomas. Truth be told, I didn't really want to walk the stage but it was the quickest way to my diploma and it was my ticket to the rest of my life. What that was, I wasn't exactly sure but I knew it didn't include 98% of the people around me and it still didn't include the one person I really ~~wanted~~ needed to be there.......

Heritage

Growing up I was unaware of the lack of my heritage. I never knew my father and due to my mother's career we moved every couple of years, so my roots were never deep. My awareness of this missing part in my life didn't surface until around middle school age. I'm not sure if it was my interest in boys peeking or seeing fathers escort their daughters onto the homecoming field that stirred my heart. But wondering why my father wasn't involved in my life began to haunt my daily thoughts. I do remember a specific statement that turned everything I ever knew upside down and inside out. I can't recall where I heard it or who said it but the words are just as vivid today as I recall them as they were when they spot lighted a part of my life that hadn't been mentioned much. Thinking now it it must have been a movie line that went like this: " You'll marry a man just like your father." I remember the tightness in my chest as all future dreams just crashed around me as my little heart replied in silence: "I don't have a father, so does that mean I don't get to get married?"

Yes, this is where my journey to sanctification began and where I would like to begin it with you as well..........

I am, once again very pleased with Danielle's work!!!! I was so scared to change my original design but I knew I wanted to take the blog in a different direction and the easiest way for me to do that was to get a make over!!! And I think Danielle did a wonderful job, don't you!!!!!! So now that my new look is up and running, I can't wait to start sharing, with you, my journey on the road of sanctification and every valley in between!!!!!!

Wow, where is the time going? I'm not sure but I am thinking instead of a summer break we need to have a serious spring break. We have been enjoying the weather and our crazy schedule!!!

I'm learning to drive the riding lawn mower, do you see our sqaure box garden over there!!!

Plus, I get to squeeze in a visit with a friend from high school that I haven't seen in years!!!! So I guess I better get going because I have alot to do!!! How is your May turning out to be?

As mom's across the world wake up on Mother's Day I feel blessed and also take time to pray for those who might be hurting. A child forever changes your heart and motherhood is a bond not easily broken and when it is; heartbreak comes forth. This bond can be broken through miscarriage, death, separation or adoption. No matter the circumstance the result is always the same: there are those who wake up on Mother's Day and do not call themselves blessed. Take time this morning and ask God to help you recall, by name, a mother who could use prayer. I know 3 special moms that I pray for specifically on Mother's Day as well as through out the year. Their heartache reminds me to hold my children a little closer and not take for granted the time I have been given with them. After all, if it weren't for our precious children we could not call ourselves mom.

And if you yourself are a mother with broken bonds; may the Holy Spirit ever so gently remind you that although your child is not with you, you are still their mom and being a mom comes at a great cost. No matter that a broken bond developed because of the death of a child or a love so great that you are willing to give your child to another woman to care for or you might be experiencing a lie revealed and walk daily with the heartache of knowing that you aborted your child. These are realities of motherhood and a true testament of how strong a mother's love is for her child. If it were not so, your grief, pain, loneliness and confusions would not be so great! I have no healing words of wisdom but want you to know that you have been placed upon my heart and I prayed for you today!!!! I know my prayers cannot heal you but I do pray that you feel the presence of the great I AM who is also our Great Comforter. You are not forgotten and no less worthy to bear the name Mom today!!!

Before I go, I wanted to share with you why I have such a deeper understanding of the heartache that goes along with Mother's Day. My story of motherhood began with heartache. In September of 2000 at 4 months pregnant I miscarried. I was active duty military taking over the counter medication to control my weight. I had noticed that I had gained about 8 pounds, which put me at my max and couldn't lose it. This is a big deal in the military, you can get kicked out for being over weight. So I was working out more and taking this medication and it did not occur to me that I might be pregnant because 1) my husband and I were using contraceptives and 2) I was still menstruating. So as I was waiting in line to receive my mandatory flu shot there was a notice that if you were pregnant, you should not take the flu shot. (Yes there was a time they did not encourage women to get the flu shot while pregnant.) It dawned on me at that time I might be pregnant. I explained to the Corpsman my situation and he sent me to get tested for a pregnancy. And in about 45 minutes my world was forever change. YES, I was pregnant. That excitement was quickly turned into the deepest sorrow I had ever felt while I was in the ER because I had miscarried. All the other details were connected later but at that moment I will never forget the depths of the pain from the loss of a child I would never meet!!!!!!! My heart can't even imagine the pain other moms' go through who get to hold their children, watch them grown or even hold them as they die. What I do know is that the only thing that got me through those years of fear and blame and pain was prayer. The prayer of others and the prayer of my heart. So that is why I as: "Can I pray for you!!!"

So this year let us not only bless all mothers with a wonderful day but also take time to reflect on all the wonderful children who have made it possible to have the blessing of being called Mom.

31 Days to Clean: Week 1

I have to admit that I have been stuck on Day 1: Write down why you want your house clean. We were suppose to come up with a Mission Statement of sorts. Something we could remember and repeat. Well I've not been able to really put into words why I want my home clean. So I figure, for now, I'll continue and hopefully by the end of this post I can find the right words to motivate me. But for now let's keep things moving and I'll share my list of priorities:

1. God
To daily seek God and be renewed by his word and allow Him to carry out the good works he has started within me.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

2. Relationships
To be encouraging to my husband
A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones. Proverbs 12:4

Disciple my children
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6

To be a breath of fresh air to my sphere of influence

The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction.Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 16:23-24

Well, well I think I found my mission statement!!!!

I will seek to daily make my home a place of enjoyment,

Whew, I did it!!!! But before I go on I must confess I haven't really done the Martha challenges as I think I have a good cleaning system in place but am gleaning some good natural cleaning solutions and am greatly enjoying the Mary challenges! They are renewing my spirit and sparking my desire for my home again. I don't think it's too late to jump in and join us for the month of May as we go through 31 Days to Clean as we have only done days 1-5. So jump on board or be inspired by those who are setting May aside to clean out the clutter in their homes and hearts by heading over to Joyful Mothering!!!!

As I looked through my blog reader I was surprised that there was only one post concerning this historical event!!!! This is a new day dawning for our country as the end of this 10 year war is finally within sight!!! Big Daddy and I were speaking, over a cup of coffee, about what is next for our country?! I pray a time of peace and time to heal both physically and mentally. Give our youth a ray of hope and a whole generation of children a chance to see what life is like without war!!!! So yes I am excited, and every time I see his picture the hair on my arms stands up and my heart leaps with excitement that justice has been served, not only for Americans but for all those who were oppressed by the Taliban.

for now anyway!!!! Thanks to Bill, I'm back online faster than ever with a healthy computer!!!!! Blogging is fun again since I don't have to wait for F-O-R-E-V-E-R as the blogs are uploading. And now that I think of it, I think he even cleaned off my keyboard. Blush, I'm a bit embarrassed now!!!!

I also wanted to give you a heads up that within the next couple of weeks things will be looking a little different around here as I'm waiting for Danielle to give me a face lift. I'm super excited to see what she comes up with!!!
I've got alot of exciting news to share but think I will wait till the new design is installed. Oh I just hope I can keep my lips sealed that long!!!!!!!!

Slow Cooking Sunday

He Has Risen........................ He Has Risen Indeed

It is Resurrection Sunday, my favorite Sunday every year!!!!!! We did not make it to Sunrise Service and truth be told we will not be making it to church at all today. We decided that we wanted to stay home as a family, since Big Daddy is still on pain medications from his surgery. So far it has been a wonderful Sunday. I haven't taken the time to do my own bible reading BUT did get to help JJ read his section for today in his new Day by Day Kids Bible. LJ found the section in his new ICB Student Discovery Bible about the crucifixion of Jesus. Both have already eaten the heads off of their bunnies,lol and all is quite as my coffee finishes brewing. I can't wait to see what CJ thinks of her ICB God's Princess Bible and Princess Bunny when she wakes up. I'm about to fix pancakes for Big Daddy, I'm sure he is hungry and needs to eat before he takes his medication. But I wanted to share with you a cute bookmark I made to go along with the Bibles we got for our children this year. This is so simple that you can even have your children decorate them on their own to help keep their page as they read through their bibles.

First you need to mark off the sides of an envelope. I chose yellow as it is a bright color and will contrast nicely with the stamp I am using.

Next you need to cut your triangles out. This can be done with regular scissors or you can use decorative scissors. (Note: you might want to test your scissors before making the final cut as you can see below depending on how you hold the scissors determines how the cut will look.

Almost done, all you have to do now is decorate. I chose to use a stamp for mine.

To give it a personal touch, I pulled out my colored pencils and blender pen.

For the boys I just colored in the heart in the middle of the flower then.....

finished it off with my blender pen. Not sure if you can tell but it smooths out the lines and makes the color pop!!! (This is one of my favorite ways to stamp!!!)

The top triangle has only been colored by a red color pencil, the bottom triangle has been touched up with a blender pen.

Next you simply slip your bookmark onto the corner of a page and have a colorful reminder of where you left off.

This is also a nice way to add a personal touch to any book. Here I made a bookmark for the Gladys Alyward book we are currently reading. It says, "We do not remembers days, we remember moments."

Now we come to the part of my post where I am suppose to share a slow cooking recipe BUT I'm afraid that today we are simply having Ham Sandwiches. Sorry I am posting these late. So I will try to be quick. The next file of photos I that I am going through contains 59 photos. As I looked through them I realized most were from a day we were invited to the Pre-School of the boys' Sensai daughter. The pictures are a bit grainy because they were taken on my cell phone but I hope you enjoy getting a small peek into the Okinawan culture!!!

This specific preschool was held at a Japanese Baptist Church. To be a Christian in the Japanese culture is looked down upon because of their tradition and culture of ancestral worship. It was always humbling in getting to know a Japanese Christian because you could feel the great sacrifice in their choice to accept Jesus as their Savior. It was humbling because it often had me reflecting on: "What sacrifice did I serve and worship Jesus?" I think it is a question that as believers if we answer honestly it will reveal the depth of our love for our Savior and Creator.

This must have been towards the end of the day as CJ is playing in the water that was meant for cleaning up.

Here is the play yard. Full of sand and not sure if you notice it but almost every building in Okinawa is made out of cement, as this church is.

This is where CJ played the most when she wasn't being cooed over by the older kids.

In the back ground you can see the children getting cleaned up after eating. And I'm not sure what LJ is doing but this is before he got wet playing in the sinks,lol.

Here was the food the parents brought to share. They pack their own lunches as well as bring food for others who might not have brought food, (that was us) or those who do not have enough food to eat. Once again very humbling!!!

If my memory serves me correctly, the little girl with her hand in her hair was the Sensai's daughter. The little boy is trying to smash the watermelon on the ground. Alot like we do at birthdays with a pinata.

Once the watermelon is opened, then everyone gets a piece to eat. Yummy!

This was on Camp Kinser and we are walking back to our tower. JJ had gotten this suit case from my mom and it said, "Going to Grandma's house." He took that thing E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E for the longest time.

This was just too funny. I walked into CJ's room one day, and there she was playing with her underwear on her head.


Ha Ha, this was a real expression of what JJ thought when I showed him how much I had to cut out of the felt. Sad to say I still have alot more to cut out, lol.

Oh yes, I forgot one more thing I am going to add to Friday Photo is posting a recent picture of the kids each week. Either individually or as a group, but sorting through all these pictures has made me realize how much I do enjoy looking at pictures and I want to be able to look back with fond memories on these days of motherhood!!!!

It is sooo hard to get a good picture of JJ, so I was so excited to see that I got such a good shot of his wonderful smile!

Here my very helpful LJ is holding our lunch he scrumptiously prepared for us. A yummy bowl of Maveled Eggs aka Deviled Eggs, which my children refuse to call them. And no that was not my doing, lol.

The CSI Challenge: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

I have been thinking and thinking about what I could come up with for The CSI Challenge this week. And I actually didn't decide until today after waiting several hours in the APU waiting room while Big Daddy was in surgery. The original idea was to use an envelope and I was going to do that (because I always have extra envelopes from all those credit card companies who must think I am related to Mr. Trump otherwise they wouldn't be hitting me up for so many credit cards) but would you believe that I got no mail today!! So I did some fast thinking and decided to use last weekend's newspaper instead. This is so much fun!!!!!! I'm going to wait till the end to tell you what I'm making; so I hope you will play along with me!!!!!

First I took out a section of the newspaper that was 2 pages but joined. If you were reading the pages it would actually be 4 different pages but when folded it is the normal width of a closed newspaper. Can I make this any more complicated?! Moving along........

I folded down the "seam" just as if I were going to make a paper airplane. (I just unfolded the paper to show how I was folding the paper)

Now to give it a little stability and keep this fold closed, I used regular tape and lined the top of the tape with my point and then folded the excess over to the back. I think the picture explains it much better than my words are right now. ( I used about an index length of tape for this part.)

Here the paper is folded and re-enforced with tape.

Next you will cut out a triangle using the bottom of the tape as a guide. (I was going to be fancy and use my curvy scissors, but they tore up the paper so I just used regular scissors instead. I think if you are going to use an envelope fancy scissors would be perfect.) I would have used my paper cutter, but Big Daddy is sleeping and I didn't want to wake him up!!

Once you have your triangle you just slip it onto the page you want to save, just like this, and you have a newspaper bookmark!!!! Darling isn't it!!!!

And here I have marked all the recipes I will use for dinner this week!!!!

I plan on letting the kids make their own bookmarks this weekend when we need something quiet to do so Big Daddy can get lots of rest and recover quickly. Or we just might ever so gently jump into bed and make these with him.

What to Pray Wednesday

As we near Resurrection Sunday, I encourage you to take 8 minutes to watch this video.

Casting Crow has a song that I love to hear my children sing called,"What this World Needs" One of my favorite lines is when then say. "We can't strap ourselves to the gospel because we are slowing it down." So, as you prepare yourself for Resurrection Sunday I pray that, as Christians, we take more time to reflect on how we all are just like Barabbas. This week I will be praying that my children come to an understanding, at an early age, just as one of the criminals who hung beside Jesus at Calvary did:
Luke 23:
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

For yourself, pray that you are being a shining light directing your children to Christ and not a distraction in what you say but do not do.

Slow Cooking Sunday

Okay so, for me, blogging is a fancy way to journal, taking notes and a safe place to store information that I might want to pass on to future generations. Which is why I love to do is blog hop. You know, when you start on one blog and then "hop" to another blog and another and another. Often I don't want to necessary follow that blog but will stumble upon a post I want to keep tabs on. Which happened this week!! I came across some recipes that I think will be perfect for future Slow Cooking Sunday posts. But instead of waiting till I try the recipe, I thought I would share the links with you so you could check them out as well. After all isn't blogging all about spreading the love!!!! So here are note worthy recipes I found this week:

Bolognese Sauce by The Weekend Gourmet

Light Red Beans and Rice by Quit Eating Out

Alfredo Chicken Soup was cooking in my slow cooker this week and it was yummy. The only issue I had was I didn't make enough!!! I second guessed myself and added only one can of Alfredo Sauce instead of the two and I should have doubled the remaining ingredients. I wont do that again. But lets stop a second so I can share a tip with you for cutting bell peppers!!!

If you are not going to use all the bell pepper, cut it below the seeds and it will keep the part with the seeds fresher longer and you use the part without the seeds today!!!

So here is what I used:

3 chicken breasts, diced
3/4 cup chopped carrots
3/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
1/2 head of broccoli
1 jar of Alfredo sauce, BUT you need to use 2!!
To taste, minced garlic, onion powder & Italian seasoning
chicken broth to get soup to desired consistency

(I use chicken bouillons to make my broth)

Thankfully I had made a loaf of bread in my bread machine and that saved the day!!!! I also wanted to share that starting next week I am planning on not just feeding your tummies but your Spirit as well. So I do hope you will stop by next week as I share what the Lord is doing in my life!!!

When I look at this ultrasound of CJ, I just can't see how anyone would think that life does not begin at conception.

Here is a sweet friend of mine, Dawn!!! I am so thankful that through the military I have met so many wonderful women. I don't keep in touch with them all, but they have all made an imprint on my heart!

Here Big Daddy is getting promoted while on the MEU. I've only been at 2 of his promotions as he has always been TAD when being promoted. This was one of those times!!!

Another sweet friend, Pamela, I meet through the military. Here we are showing off our first hooded towels we made. I was very, very pregnant with CJ!!

This is my #1 funny man, or as I so lovingly call him on my blog, Big Daddy!!!

Well that is the highlights for pictures 249-290. And I am happy to announce that there are no more pictures to go through for this folder!!!! Check back next week to see what picture folder I am diving into next!!! Happy weekend!!!

A Season for All Things

Homeschool Mother's Journal 3-26-11

In my life this week...
As a community we have been dealing with forest fires all around us. We packed up a suitcase Thursday night in anticipation of being ordered to evacuate. Thankful it did not come to that but the amazing volunteers are still working to get the fire under control. I am currently brainstorming a way to say thank you to all the volunteers who kept our homes safe!!! Any suggestions?!

In our homeschool this week...
We finally got all our curriculum for next year in!!!! I don't think LJ was too thrilled about that but I was cause it means we can get a good 6 weeks done before we break for summer!!! We "promote" in April and get started on the new year. This seems to help bridge the gap of review and when the kids come back from summer break they are ready to start their new year without the dreaded, "but I already know this" attitude. It also helps me get a good idea of how things are going to work in September and I can better gauge the flow of our days!!!

My favorite thing this week was...
Because of the fires, Big Daddy had Friday off so I headed into town to do some serious work at the Resource Room. It was nice to be able to focus on cranking out some crafts and also get the rest of our year written down on paper. I got really excited to see that summer break isn't too far away!!!!

What's working/not working for us...
We are moving into memorizing multiplication facts. I am confident that LJ knows how to multiply but getting him motivated to memorize his facts isn't going so well. Any suggestions?!?!

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...
I am finding it hard to set aside time to plan. I'm a planner, I just really need to know where we are going. How do you guys get your planning done?

Trying to make up for last week I went weeded through photos 180 to 248 and chose alot of pictures with Big Daddy because it was his birthday over the weekend!!! It is fun to look back and be reminded how playful he is with the kids!!!!

I love the expression on JJ's face here and you can see how Big Daddy is really enjoying this moment.

What to Pray Wednesday

I am way behind the curve when it comes to Christian music. I guess that is what happens when you live overseas for six years. So that is why I just discovered Mandisa's song Stronger last week while listening to K-LOVE.

"fall into the arms of Jesus....cause if He started this work in your life He'll be faithful to complete it if only you'll believe it, He knows how much it hurts and I'm sure that He's goin' help you get through this..."

And what I thought was neat was it was exactly the day after the boys and I studied about the life of Job.

Job 1
6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

12 The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;
may the name of the LORD be praised.”

22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Job 2

4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

6 The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”

7 So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.

9 His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

There is so much in just these several passages that contradict not only what alot of churches are teaching but also what I have been teaching my own children. Yikes. Remember last week when I said I want to grow disciples of Christ and not just children that obey me and what I say!!!

Well Levi quickly picked up on something I had taught him that was in error. And the conversation kinda went like this:
LJ: "Mom, this isn't true!"
L2L: "What do you mean, of course it is true its what the Bible says. What exactly do you think is not true?"
LJ: "Well mom, you said evil can't be in the presence of God and Satan stood before God and talked to him, that just couldn't happen, could it."
L2L: "Oh, I see. Well you know what LJ, today the Bible has proven mom wrong."
LJ: "How did it do that?"
L2L: " First off, the bible tells us that Satan was before God, so that means that evil can be before God doesn't it?"
LJ: "yeah." (not really convinced)
L2L: (I'm starting to get really nervous now and then it hits me!!) "LJ, I think we need to stop and pray, okay!"
LJ: "Sure, mom"
L2L: "Father, please forgive me for guiding your precious blessing away from the truth of Your Word. I desire only to teach him Your Truth and Your Word. Father, give me the words, just as you gave Moses, to reveal your truth to LJ. I do not want him to walk away from this lesson confused but confident that Your Word is true. In Jesus Name, Amen."
(And then God reminded me of this truth)
L2L: "LJ, the Bible tells us one day that everyone will stand before Jesus for judgment, do you remember that verse?"
LJ: "Yeah." (not sure where I'm going with this)
L2L: "And everyone that stands before Jesus will not have accepted His atonement for our sins and they will be found guilty."
LJ: "Right, if you don't accept Jesus as your Savior, then you go to hell."
L2L: "So that means evil will be before God. So mommy should have said that there is no evil in God. And did you notice that even Satan had to listen to God and under is under His control........

We went into a deeper discussion but I don't have the time to elaborate. However if you have a question feel free to email me or leave a comment and I will get back with you one on one.

The whole point of this post is that we need to be willing to confess in prayer, before our our children when we do something that needs forgiveness. This teaches them that it is okay to admit that we are wrong and if we teach our children to do this quickly, we can help shield their hearts from the guilt of sin we have not confessed before God.

Susan G Komen

It's a name we hear often, especially since A Race for Cure is in full swing. And of course this morning what arrived in my email box? An email about someone raising money because they are doing A Race for Cure. What to do, what to do when you know that Susan G Komen gives grants to Planned Parenthood. What to do, what to do when you know that Planned Parenthood is America's largest provider and promoter of abortions? What to do, what to do when you know that the founder of Planned Parenthood originally designed Planned Parenthood as a way to exterminate "colored people."

My issue is not with Susan G Komen foundation raising money for cancer but their support of Planned Parenthood. I think Rosa Louise McCauley Parks hit the nail right on the head when she said

"Stand for something or you will fall for anything. Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."
